Equipping to equip - in Rotherham
At the beginning of September I spent a week on the fourth intensive study week for my Masters course. The module explored both the doctrine of scripture and various theories of interpretation. It was a very interesting time and I came away with a lot to think about.
One of the most challenging things was engaging with the Reformed view of the preaching of God's word. Martin Luther, John Calvin and Karl Barth in particular, reminded us that God commands the church to gather and sit under the preached word in such a way that the hearers expect to hear from God. (1 Peter 4:11). I think I'm really beginning to understand the stretching benefit of engaging with various historical traditions as conversation partners.
I was also blessed to attend the FIEC leader conference in Blackpool at the beginning of November. Brian Croft was one of the main speakers and shared some of his significant experience of shepherding God's people. It was a sobering reminder of the seriousness of the task of keeping watch over myself, other leaders and God's precious flock (Acts 20:28).
Do pray that I’d continue to grow in my knowledge and depth of insight into the grace we’ve received in Jesus Christ.
I've enjoyed serving at church this term. Two particular highlights that stand out to me have been the opportunity to deliver some teaching on evangelism and the opportunity to contribute to this term's preaching.
Over the course of three weeks I delivered a seminar titled "Speaking Naturally to Others About Jesus". I really enjoyed the challenge of preparing the teaching and helping a group of church members think through and practice how they can share Jesus with others in ways that are grounded in their own lives.
As a church we have been working our way through the book of Exodus. This term we have also been providing connected notes for our mid-week discipleship groups. It was a great challenge to preach three weeks on the bounce for the first time and develop the supplementary content.
I've also been working with our deacon for children and young people, and with the church member overseeing welcome and integration. A highlight this term was the first termly Bring and Share meal, which went really well and showcased our church's great generosity.
In partnership with our ministry trainee, I'm also assembling the team for this year's Christmas events. It's been wonderful to reflect on the impact and beauty of the incarnation as we plan various celebrations. We're very excited about the upcoming Christmas season.
Do pray that God’s word would be taking root and transforming lives here in Rotherham.
